Objectives and Justification: Why Have a Science Film Festival?

The emblematic history of the Prism Awards, after celebrating their 20th edition in 2007, inspired the Friends of the House of Sciences Association (Asociación de Amigos da Casa das Ciencias) to take on the ambitious project of establishing A Coruña as a place to promote scientific films and documentaries. Note that the city of A Coruña houses a complex of museums called Scientific Museums (Museos Científicos) that have been pioneer in their multidisciplinary focus on science outreach programs. Recently, the city has also become the new home of the National Museum of Science and Technology (Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología), which adds yet another museum to the list. In view of this rich scientific setting, what better place to appreciate the diversity of the world of scientific documentaries than the city of A Coruña? The main goal of the Science Film Festival, which is clearly the result of the rich tradition of the Prism Awards, is to promote the science-related films and documentaries presented so that they may reach an audience that extends beyond the borders of Spain.
Another objective of the Science Film Festival is to be an international referent in the industry of scientific films and documentaries. In the future it aspires to be recognized as the Film Festival where the best science-related films and documentaries can be seen year after year.
